The parents of John Robert Kotfila Jr. wept at the Statehouse Friday as they spoke of the heroic actions of their son and urged lawmakers to pass a bill requiring first-time drunken drivers to install ignition interlock systems in their vehicles…

Expert quote:

“By the time they get caught and convicted for the first time for DUI they’ve actually had impaired driving somewhere from 80 to 100 times. And in Massachusetts, we have low arrest rates for DUI and low convictions. The important thing from the health perspective is that ignition interlock laws are highly effective. They reduce repeat drunk driving offenses somewhere between 50 and 70 percent of the time.”
